Planet Scale 2021

what where when why

The relative size of celestial objects can be hard to imagine. This photograph that I composed from different public domain sources, including NASA and the European Space Agency, demonstrates a curious scale: Jupiter is about 10 times the diameter of Earth, while the Sun is about 10 times the diameter of Jupiter.

how

After obtaining the three images in a resolution as high as possible, I colour-corrrected and upsized them (using machine learning, naturally) to nearly a billion pixels, then composed them according to their relative scale. Printed at 20" × 16", this photo is 1,228 dots-per-inch. Notice the visible solar flares and dark spots on the sun, not to mention Jupiter’s Great Red Spot.
